Outlined Town
is this just another outlined town?
penciled-in, and i have only just begun.
outliving my mother, outliving my brother.
this town just a test of endurance,
of wills, and again,
I have only just begun.
Signs for women to follow
and they said her breasts were
wrong,
Her name wasn't a True name.
so i base their will on the outlines
of this narrow town and the limits of my
own ageless career
That only a woman can bend away from.
set me up against the stones that have
marked this corner a sanction
for ghosts and tired women. where they
bury the nameless who died fulfilling maternal duty
and a stillborn baby stiff in her arms.
when she cried for him to stop-she had more to
defend than her body
watching him write a letter- there was more
denied to her than she was allowed to understand,
resting there on that paper.
things she should have taken for granted
a voice, a name they intended for the other one,
the one buried at the corner-where the only road in
this outlined town turns, to pull away.
here on a border we can
bury the other one
the one with her name.
